Minimally Invasive Interventional Therapy----the First Choice of Tumor Patients

Interventional therapy is a new interdisciplinary and cross-border therapy that combines radiological technology, surgical methods and medical medicine. It usually needs to cut a small insection in the femoral artery of the patient and apply femoral puncture to insert a duct against the artery flow under the guidance of X-ray monitoring. When the duct reaches the location of the tumor, it injects the chemotherapy medicine into the tumor. Some can also block the feeding artery of the tumor with suppository, through which the tumor cells can be rapidly killed, and its effect is obviously better than systemic chemotherapy.

Minimally Invasive Interventional Therapy----the First Choice of Tumor Patients

  What is interventional therapy?

Interventional therapy for tumor is a way to treat the tumor in direct by injecting anti-cancer medicine or suppository through arterial duct into blood-supplying parts of the tumor under the monitoring of devices, like X-ray, B-ultrasound, and CT scans. This treatment needs assistance of ducts, which gains it the name of catheter therapy.

  Infusion chemotherapy

Interventional chemotherapy, or infusion chemotherapy, is to inject dense chemotherapy medicine into the tumor tissues through the blood-supplying artery duct of the tumor. Its advantage is that it maintains a locally high medicine concentration, which is 10-100 times higher than that of intravenous administration, and it creates a much stronger destruction to the tumor cells than systemically intravenous administration.

Arterial embolism chemotherapy is a kind of therapy that achieves it therapeutic purposes by injecting suppository into the blood-supplying parts of the tumor through ducts to cut off the blood-supply of the tumor tissues, thus to cause ischemia and cytoclasis of the tumor cells. If chemotherapy medicine is used at the time when ischemia occurs, the tumor cells will be double attacked. Thus, its effect will be more evident than that of simple catheter infusion chemotherapy or mere transcatheter embolization.

  Advantages of interventional therapy

Interventional therapy is a kind of modern high-tech minimally invasive therapy, which is to insert special-made precise instruments, like ducts or wires, into human body under the guidance of medical imaging devices to diagnose or perform local treatment to the tumor.

Its major character is that by inserting tiny ducts through rice-size insections (puncture points) only, all kinds of complicated diseases, like coronary disease, irregular pulse, cancer, vascular tumor, and all kinds of hemorrhage, cerebrovascular malformation, etc. can be treated. No surgery, minimally invasive, fast recovery and evident effect.

Principles of minimally invasive interventional therapy for malignant cancers

Interventional therapy for malignant cancers can be classified as vascular interventional treatment and non-vascular interventional treatment。

Vascular interventional treatment mainly aims at the blood-supplying artery of the tumor. It either injects the anti-cancer medicine into the tumor area to kill the tumor in direct, or blocks the blood-supplying artery of the tumor to cut off the nutrient supply of the tumor, thus to reduce the tumor size, or applies the two methods together, that is to combined the anti-cancer medicine with the suppository and then inject them into the target artery together. While the suppository is cutting off the blood supply, the medicine is remained in the tumor area and taking effect of local chemotherapy, thus the tumor tissues are killed.

Non-vascular interventional treatment for malignant cancers is a diagnosis and treatment method targeting the infected tumor organs. It uses all kinds of instruments and is performed under the guidance of medical imaging devices, like X-ray, CT, B-ultrasound, MRI, and so on. It mainly includes percutaneous biopsy, luminal expansion and stent angioplasty, percutaneous intratumoral injection, percutaneous multi-pole radiofrequency ablation, and so on.

Experts from Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou mildly reminded that: after the treatment, various reactions, such as fever, chilling, nausea, vomiting, local pain, etc. may occur due to the differences of tumor location and medicine. But these symptoms can be relieved through treatment.
